A number of Warwickshire Vision Support’s amazing volunteers received recognition at the recent High Sheriff Awards. These awards are an annual celebration of Warwickshire’s unsung heroes, honouring individuals who dedicate their time to charitable work in their communities.
The following volunteers were recognised for their work supporting the visually impaired community around the county.
Stratford-upon-Avon: Jenny Cobley
Jenny has been running a Social Club since the 1970s, providing entertainment and activities for those with sight loss. She also co-ordinates transport for club members with the local organisation VASA. Despite losing her own sight during the COVID pandemic, Jenny’s determination has remained unwavering and her contribution to WVS is outstanding.
Stratford-upon-Avon: Deanna Maria Smith (known as Maria)
Maria coordinates a team of home-visiting volunteers in the Stratford area, offering companionship and practical assistance to isolated people. She also oversees a volunteer telephone service where people have a chat and a natter – these calls mean so much to those most isolated in the community who need help and companionship. Maria’s dedication is second to none.
Rugby: Kay Shaw
Kay has led the Rugby VIP Social Club for many years, ensuring visually impaired adults in the area have access to enjoyable activities and entertainment. She works with the Rotary Club to arrange transport for members door-to-door. Kay is a ball of energy and her group is always very popular.
Rugby: Sheila Richards
Sheila is another dedicated volunteer who provides invaluable support to the Rugby VIP Club. She has also spent many years visiting people who are either unable to or have difficulty leaving their homes. She always has a chat, reads correspondence, checks use-by dates on fridge items – anything to help maintain independence and always with a smile.
Nuneaton: Andrew Harris
Andrew, who is based in Nuneaton, has volunteered for many years as an IT trainer, helping visually impaired individuals make the most of technology to enhance their independence. His one-to-one appointments have helped many people with sight loss to use their phones and tablets and access apps and voice-activated technology. He is always calm and patient and is an absolute credit to our charity. Andrew has also been giving lessons on playing the tin whistle and now has his own ensemble working on tunes.
Southam: John Lawrence
John manages the monthly Southam VIP Social Club and personally drives people to the meeting. He makes a point of keeping in touch with group members to check that they are OK. He is a natural organiser which contributes to the success of the club and community spirit.
Leamington Spa / Warwick: Liz Thiebe
Liz serves as the Chair of Trustees for Warwickshire Vision, ensuring the charity’s governance and operations run smoothly. Liz is a great encouragement to staff and her delicious baking is a welcome treat. Warwickshire Vision Support is very much in her heart and we are so grateful for her constant support.
