The Board of Trustees/Directors
We are seeking volunteers to strengthen the Board of Directors/Trustees and are looking for people who have a professional or commercial background. Knowledge of business management and one or more speciality such as legal, HR, financial, publicity, fundraising and administration is essential. We would also welcome professionals in eye care including doctors, consultants and ophthalmologists. Board meeting are held at 5.00pm every 6 weeks usually on a Thursday. Matters arising between meetings are dealt with by email. There is also a system of small sub-committees who make recommendations to be ratified by the Board. Trustees are subject to DBS checks.
Our procedure is: after interview, the Selection Committee report to the Board who may invite you to attend Board meetings on an ad-hoc basis with no right to vote. After attending a minimum of three meetings the Board may co-opt you as a Director/Trustee if you wish them to do so. At the next General Meeting after being co-opted, you will need to offer yourself for election by the Membership. This rather lengthy procedure is done to ensure we have the right people on the Board.
