Echo Dot Trial Results

Warwickshire Vision Support were given a number of Echo Dots during the first lockdown and to maximise their potential for our service users we decided to run a trial for six months and then pass them onto new people later in the year. Due to further lockdowns we have not retrieved the devices but have asked the lucky recipients for their feedback.
Set Up Process:
40% for the people receiving the Echo Dot set it up themselves whilst 60% had help from friends or family.
90% said that it was very easy or easy to set up

Sky voice guidance system for Q boxes

Sky have just started to roll out new firmware for the Sky Q TV box which adds some new voice features. This includes Voice Guidance which speaks descriptions of the menus you are accessing, descriptions of options you are hovering over or have selected. The roll out is expected to be completed to all customers by the end of April 2021. To activate use the Sky Q Voice remote and say “Voice Guidance On“ or “Voice Guidance Off”

Louie Voice Control

This is an Android app that is still in development but can already do many things. It is voice control for popular apps and phone functionality. It is designed and written by Pramit who is visually impaired.
Currently Louie can fully control and interact with Uber, YouTube and WhatsApp so you can just talk and listen and do the following:

Enjoy your favourite videos
Send Text or Audio Messages, Share Audio & Video, Make Audio & Video Calls
Fully Manage your Contacts & Make Phone Calls

Show and Tell available on Echo Show

The Alexa Show and Tell Feature was released on Echo Show Devices in the UK in December.
It identifies common grocery items and other products by using the Echo Show’s camera.
Hold up the item, eg a tin of food, about a foot away from the camera and say “Alexa, what am I holding”. When prompted turn the item around to show all sides. Alexa will help position the item with tips and sounds.

iPhone Back Tap

With IOS 14 and an iPhone 8 or above there is a new feature called Back Tap that can be used to perform a selected action either by double or triple tapping anywhere on the back of the phone. This can be used to turn on an accessibility feature eg Voice Over or open an application eg camera or perform a custom shortcut.
Settings - Accessibility - Touch - Back Tap
There are two options a double tap or a triple tap, select the action you wish to configure for each from the list.
Note : Some phone cases may inhibit this feature
LiDAR and People Detection

LiDAR stands for light detection and ranging and it is a 3 dimensional mapping technology similar to radar and sonar. It is used in self driving cars, factory floor robots and robot vacuum cleaner to navigate the world around them by sending out laser beams and analysing the return time of the beam to generate the map.
The technology is now becoming more accurate, cheaper and smaller and has started to be installed in mobile devices.
A LiDAR scanner has been added to the iPhone 12 Pro by the camera lenses on the back of the phone. It uses bouncing.....
What 3 Words

The world has been divided up into 3 metre squares and each square has been allocated a unique combination of three words. This means that you can navigate to anywhere in the world by knowing its three words. The words can be used for navigation, emergencies and deliveries.
A smart app is available and it can be used to
give you your current location in 3 words in an emergency or just to share with your friends
enter in a location address and then navigate to it via your navigation app
share the precise starting point of an activity

BBO Visual Assist Plugin Details:
Assists visually impaired users to play Bridge on the BBO (Bridge Base Online) website by:
Reading text, cards, bids, score etc. under the mouse cursor.
Describing actions such as clicking on a bid or a card to play.
Describing actions by other players such as bids, played cards, alerts and claims.
The extension can be tailored to the required level of assistance by enabling or disabling the appropriate functions using the extension’s pop-up.....
Freeview Play Accessible TV Guide

Freeview’s Accessible TV Guide is now available on channel 555 of internet-connected Freeview Play devices.
It is designed to make it simpler for viewers with accessibility needs, such as visual impairments or hearing loss, to discover and find content more easily.
To use the new Accessibility TV Guide you will need to go to Channel 555 on your Freeview Play connected device, you may have to make sure that your TV is retuned and fully up to date with current channel listings and is connected to the internet.
